while I'm in the updating mood

How 'bout some recent watercolor sketches?

Long overdue...

This moleskine update should've happened sooner-- but then there's be less to look at!

New Moleskine (again)

New stuff.

long pose figure drawing

Got the opportunity to do a long pose drawing the other night. Still weaning myself off ink and readjusting to conte.

Big Update

Image
I realized I've only posted sparsely from my current moleskine. Now that it's finished, I thought I should put up everything I hadn't posted yet (plus a few from my watercolor sketchbook).

Figure Drawings

Image
I'm attempting to get back into the habit of drawing other things. I went to the Coppini's open life-drawing session the other night for some quick pose drawing. The model was very good and I even got one sketch in my moleskine.

Not so many mom-and-pops

This is my first ever Starbucks sketch, I believe. There are a lot fewer (as a percentage) locally-owned coffee houses here in San Antonio than there were in Bozeman (which didn't have a Starbucks). This is one is near San Antonio College on busy San Pedro Avenue. As has happened at least a half-dozen times now that I'm back in SA, I was approached by a panhandler while sketching. I must look like I'm not from around here, as they never seem to hassle other folks sitting near me (that or they think someone sketching is more likely to give them money?). And while there are just as many lookie-loos here as in Bozeman, folks here aren't as free-flowing with praise. Most just grunt a brief "huh" and move on. Maybe they don't want to bother me. Maybe they've seen better. In any event, I seem to warrant the same amount of curiosity here as in Bozeman (with the exception of being especially appealing to the aforementioned panhandlers.) A final commen

Alamo Plaza

Image
While I was drawing I listened to a man in Alamo Plaza shouting about the Bible to no one in particular, arguments amongst a group of Iowan tourists (I think) about which way the Riverwalk was located (they ultimately went the wrong way), was approached by a woman who wanted to give me a copy of her "testimony," and a young homeless kid (he called himself a squatter) who swore profusely and declared he had never seen anyone in the world who could draw as well as I could. It had also just rained the night before and all of downtown was like a steambath. I had to hold my moleskine far enough from my face that I couldn't sweat on it.

Our part of town

Image
San Antonio is a large city, but it doesn't have much in the way of a central commercial business district. Downtown you'll find a lot of hotels, some historic buildings, and more hotels. The true office buildings are scattered about town, often in low-rise clusters and on large campuses, or strung out along the freeways. Linda and I live about 8 miles northwest of downtown, near the intersection of two very busy freeways, and there are quite a few of these odd, scattered midrise offices surrounded by strip centers and suburban subdivisions. Tall, but decidedly not urban.

Bigger, taller, and more of it

I took a trip into downtown San Antonio and it appears I'll have my work cut out for me. There appears to be more than a summer or two's worth of subject matter here from which to choose. In any event, this afternoon's ramblings were my first real San Antonio sketches, outside of a trip I took here in June for a friend's wedding. Things I'll need to remember: sunscreen, sunglasses, the patience to deal with panhandlers, the ability to find cheap parking (or the bus), time. I think that's about it.
