Berkeley and San Francisco trip

I just got back from the Bay Area, where I visited my friend Chris Turbuck and saw the sights (and drew them).  Chris is in the middle of an artist-in-residency program at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA so I thought I'd come out to see what he's been up to.  We went into San Fransisco, went to SFMOMA and saw a Bill Kentridge exhibit (and the man himself) and walked around.  We ate some great food, saw some cool stuff, walked through an empty mall, etc.  An all-around great time.  

Here are some sketches I did during (and in preparation) for my little road trip.

A patron at the Biryani House, a Berkeley Indian restaurant. They forgot to place our order for almost an hour until I went up and said something. The food, though, was tasty.

This is just across the street from the Transamerica Pyramid, the tallest building in SF. Cool.

I walked all around town for two days, and up many hills. This is a view from Telegraph Hill in Pioneer Park, at the base of Coit Tower.

    Ah! great work in SF, love that one of the Hobart Building. If you're ever in town again, drop me a note and lets go sketching! (That's not as crazy as it sounds - we're both urban sketchers :)

    wow your drawings are amazing, thanks for posting them
    i'm a new student in architecture, and i gotta say i really hope i will be able to sketch this good, i dont really have the talent
    i get nervous a lil everytime i wanna draw a line on the paper :/ just. awful.

How I Draw Spherical Panoramas

Ever since I first sketched a spherical panorama in the Procreate app, people have been asking for a tutorial, so I've finally put together the steps for how I did it. I had seen illustrations that you can pan around before and I wanted to figure out a way to do one on site, rather than make it in my studio from photo references. A brief history of how I started to "curve" my sketches

When asked what kind of art I make, I say "I sketch what I see." That's it. I go out on location and sketch what I see. Or I stay home and sketch what I see. The "what I see" part is what's important to me. And that brings with it all sorts of other ideas to explore. Because what do we see, really? My style of sketching is a mixture of a few different approaches to observational art-making. There's the still-life/in-studio tradition where the artist narrows their focus on just a small portion of their field of view. There's plein-air landscape painting, where often the goal is to widen the field of view as much as possible and take in sweeping vistas. There's architectural and perspective drawing, where the challenge is to effectively depict human-made spaces with their corresponding geometry in a convincing way. Dinosaurs of the recent past

I suppose some of you who have been following this blog for some time and who aren't interested in dinosaurs probably find these posts excruciating.  Sorry, guys; there will be plenty more urban sketching posts, including some very soon. Meanwhile, I've been spending the last three months or so re-learning how to draw dinosaurs, and rediscovering the world of dinosaurs-- the research, the art, and the fans, thanks to the dinosaur blogosphere. Why do I say "rediscovering?"  Because, about 17 years ago, I was nuts about dinosaurs.  Just completely bonkers.  This post is about how that all started and ended, and started again.
